US weekly unemployment claims remain at multi-decade lows

Initial US jobless claims drifted slightly lower last week, with secondary claims moving to fresh multi-decade lows.
Over the week ending on 9 June, initial US jobless claims slipped by 4,000 to reach 218,000, according to the Department of Labor.

Economists had forecast a reading of 220,000.

Meanwhile, the four-week moving average, which aims to smooth out the volatility in the data from one week to the next, dipped by 1.250 to hit 225,500.

Secondary unemployment claims, those which are not filed for the first time and referencing the week ending on 2 June, fell by 49,000 to 1.697m, that was the least since the week ending on 1 December, 1973.
